سوره-حمد-01-4000

Significance of Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim [In the Name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most-Merciful]

First of all, why do the surahs of the Quran and everything in Islam begin with the name of God? Beginning something with God’s name shows the orientation of that act or speech and who it is for in the same way that beginning something with anyone else’s name does. When you begin something in the name of God, you show that this work is for God in the same way that you show that the task goes back to God. In other words, it is directed toward God. So, when you begin a surah of the Quran – a collection of holy words – with the name of God, it means that these words are for God, they are directed toward God, and they are to bring understanding about God.
