The Sacred Defense Era was a Manifestation of a Nation's Spiritual Power
On Khordad 3, 1361 (May 24, 1982), just a few hours after Khorramshahr had been liberated from occupation, the late army commander Major General Sayyad-Shirazi telephoned me to present a report on the condition of the battlefield. I was the Islamic Republic's president then. He told me that thousands of Iraqi soldiers and officers had lined up to surrender to the Iranian forces! This is the manifestation of the spiritual power of a nation. This power was manifested not only in the liberation of Khorramshahr but also in other military operations such as Karbala-5, Valfajr-8, Khaybar and Badr operations. Indeed, our great nation displayed its spiritual power during all the eight years of the Sacred Defense.

The victories achieved in the Sacred Defense should never fall into oblivion
The glorious past of our nation and our honorable history should be preserved. The victories achieved by our brave and faithful youth in the course of the eight years of the Sacred Defense should never fall into oblivion. These victories bear great significance, since they were achieved not just over one aggressor regime, but actually over a circle of arrogant powers. These powers, noticing that all their calculations had proved wrong because of the uprising of a nation in a sensitive part of the world like Iran and its achieving independence under the banner of Islam, extended all kinds of support and assistance to the Iraqi regime in its military aggression against the Islamic Republic.

The Grand Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei notified the general policies of Article 44 of the Constitution to the chiefs of the three government branches and to the chairman of the Expediency Council on Monday, May 23.
The communication of these strategic and crucial policies was done in conformity with Paragraph 1 of Article 110 of the Constitution, which states that it is within the jurisdiction and part of the duties of the Leader of the Islamic Republic to set down the general policies of the Islamic system following consultations with the Expediency Council.

He also stressed that the Expediency Council is expected to oversee the proper implementation of the policies in cooperation with the relevant state organs and present annual reports on their enforcement.

The Renaissance paradise turned into an inferno
When the Westerners during the renaissance period in Europe separated religion from science and politics, they intended to build a paradise on earth similar to the one promised to mankind by religions. That paradise has now turned into an inferno. This is something even admitted by the Westerners themselves. It is true that the religion that European intellectuals in the renaissance period opposed was not a true religion but a body of superstitions. It was totally against scientific advances and discoveries. This is why Galileo was sentenced to death for his scientific views, and other scientists were also tortured and even died of torture for their scientific discoveries. It was a distorted version of Christianity, not real Christianity. Therefore, there was nothing wrong with parting with this kind of religion in that period. However, the separation of spirituality and morality from science, politics, individual life and social relations was not a proper thing to do. The Westerners replaced religion by science and rationality and said that there was no need for religion any longer. This was the condition prevailing in the 19th and 20th century. But for the past forty or fifty years, they have even been casting aspersions on rationality, rejecting all rational principles and advocating relativism and skepticism with regard to all principles, including moral, rational and even scientific principles. This is not a proper paradigm to be imitated and followed by other nations. Imitating and following a failed model is a big mistake, as it will lead nowhere and promise no bright prospects.
