Every year, during the days commemorating the martyrdom of Hussain Ibn Ali (a.s.)—the revered grandson of the Prophet of Islam—and his companions, Ayatollah Khamenei holds rowza ceremonies for 6 nights from the night of the 6th of Muharram to the night of the 11th day of Muharram. A rowza ceremony is a sacred congregation in Islam and especially among the Shia, where the martyrdom of the family members of the Prophet and the hardships they endured are remembered, and the duties of their followers and friends today are referred to.
