Ayatollah Naseri: A remainder from his predecessors and valuable for the people

The following is the full text of the speech delivered by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in a meeting with members of the “Wayfarers on the Path of God” national conference. This meeting was held on September 26, 2023 in commemoration of the late Ayatollah Muhammad Ali Naseri. The statements of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution were later published on October 5, 2023 at the place of this congress in Qom Province.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

May God elevate Mr. Naseri’s status and bestow upon him His special grace, God willing. He is surely already benefitting from God’s grace. And may God fill the void left by his absence, God willing. The presence of individuals like him is truly very valuable. We greatly need the things that people like Mr. Naseri can provide to society, things such as ethics, spirituality, and attentiveness toward God. May God protect you and the other gentlemen.

This program that you have announced for the conference in commemoration of the late Mr. Naseri (may God be pleased with him) is a good program. In other words, the different aspects of the subject have been considered, but what’s important is for you to be able to convey these topics to the audience while providing a scientific, well-founded explanation. This is what we need today.

When a person like Mr. Naseri is speaking with the people himself, this makes things easy. Because the words that come out of the mouth of a person like Mr. Naseri are heartfelt and spiritual, arising from his sincerity and attentiveness toward God. What such a person says is not abstruse, he does not use difficult terms, nor is there a special scientific framework involved with his words. His words are like water that boils up and flows from the heart. It is as though the audience is sitting at the foot of a spring and drinking water. There are no difficulties involved when doing this.

What has solved the difficulties? It is his sincerity and his strong spirit which is connected to God’s grace and attention. This solves the difficulties. That is how it is when he or someone like him is alive and talking. But when we wish to convey these concepts, we become intermediaries. This use of intermediaries creates a barrier, but there is no choice. If we wish to convey these words, such methods are needed. We need to write, transcribe, arrange, and classify them. There is no other way.

However, these words will lack the purity, spirituality, splendor, and manifestation that they had during his lifetime. What can we do to compensate for this? We should make sure the content is presented in a way that is well-founded and well thought out. We need to make use of words and terms with a rich literature. These are important matters. And we need to prepare discussions in accordance with the thoughts and minds of the audience.

After all, someone who is a student is different from a non-academic person, a seminary student, or someone who is older. They each have a different temperament. They accept things differently. We must be mindful of these matters. In my opinion, if you want this conference to take place in a way that is line with your intentions and your goals, you need to follow these guidelines.

The late Ayatollah Naseri was a remainder from his predecessors. That is, he was an example of those people whose names only we have heard of. People benefited from his presence, and being in his company was a spiritual pleasure. His everyday words were beneficial. That is, it wasn’t like this that you had to attend, for example, one of his special classes to benefit from him. No, even the normal things that he would say in his daily life were beneficial to those around him.

I had the honor of being in his presence several times. He had benefited from the presence of Sayyid Jamaluddin Golpaygani as well. I cannot remember exactly if his father was one of Sayyid Jamal’s students or if he himself had been his student too. The late Sayyid Jamal passed away in 1957, and Ayatollah Naseri was born in 1931. He was 26 years old at the time of Sayyid Jamal’s demise, so he may have been his student himself.

There was a story that he narrated for me about the late Sayyid Jamal. I heard this story from him two or three times. The last time, I was in the hospital, and he had come to visit me. I asked him to sit down and tell me the story one more time, and he narrated it again for me in detail. Well, he was a very valuable person. Ayatollah Naseri was truly a blessing, especially for the people of Isfahan who attended his lectures and listened to his speeches in person.

I hope that more people like him will be trained, will advance, and will be beneficial for the people, God willing. Of course, we definitely have prominent people in [our] day and age. We need to search, find them, and learn and benefit from their presence. May God elevate his spiritual position, God willing. And may God keep you and protect you, God willing. And may this commemoration of Ayatollal Naseri be beneficial, God willing. May you be successful and assisted (by God), and may God protect you, God willing.
