Imam Khamenei

Spiritual and scientific achievements are infinite in scope

The following is an excerpt of the speech by Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in a meeting with outstanding students on October 26, 2002.

Proof of Scientific Glories

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

I became very happy to receive the gifts from you dear ones – your medals. I believe that this has been one of the most valuable gifts that I have received for a number of reasons. One is that these gifts are in fact the proof of our youth’s scientific glories. Just as a father is exhilarated from the bottom of his heart when his child returns from school or university with a scientific certificate, I too had the same feeling when I saw your medals and I became happy from the bottom of my heart to see that our youth and the dear children of this nation have obtained these glories in scientific areas.

The second reason is that I witnessed signs of your attention to spiritual, Islamic and revolutionary matters in your course of action.

The Religious and Revolutionary Orientation of Youth

Religious and revolutionary orientations are very valuable for our country and I thank God for the existence of these orientations among youth at an extensive level. That is while some people wish to deny it and they magnify some phenomena which sometimes appear among youth in every country. They do this in order prove that the relationship of our youth with the Revolution, with Islam and with religion has been undermined.

I have never believed and will never believe this because I am in contact with youth - they come here and I too attend their gatherings. I have witnessed with my own eyes, their sentiments, their works, their orientations and their directions. This endeavor [winning medals and giving them to His Eminence] was a clear and prominent example of these sentiments.

In Mashhad, I have an exhibition of the gifts that I have received, which is located near the holy shrine of Imam Ridha (as). I give all valuable and cherished gifts that I receive to that exhibition. I have asked for these medals to be sent to that exhibition, God willing, so that they can ornament that location.

The Infinite Road to Progress

I hope that you will make progress. You should never shut the door to scientific progress and you should not be satisfied with any level of scientific progress. All the achievements that humanity can make in spiritual areas – such as in scientific, moral and religious areas and in areas related to lofty spiritual values – are infinite in scope. In other words, there is always a possibility for progress and the road is an infinite one.

Spiritual and Scientific Self-Edification

I hope that you will progress in scientific, religious and spiritual areas and in the area of self-edification. I hope that you will dedicate more time to yourselves and to edifying and preparing yourselves so that you can return a big part of the debt that you have to this country in the future. All of us are indebted to this country, this history and this nation.

I hope that in the future, you will be able to undertake great responsibilities in the area of spirituality and science with increasing efforts and diligence, God willing.
