Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, met President Mohammad Khatami and his Cabinet members on Wednesday, November 10.
Speaking at the meeting, the Leader referred to some words from the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (greetings be upon him), and said that the nature of religious belief is such that it lays the ground for pious deeds.
"According to the words of Imam Ali (greetings be upon him), endurance and perseverance, certitude, justice and jihad are the four pillars of faith, and any weakness and instability in these pillars will cause the weakness of faith," Ayatollah Khamenei noted.
The Leader further said that if religious faith is not supported by pious deeds and strong reasoning, the faith will be gradually weakened. "The weakness of faith happens so gradually that, most of the time, it is not noticeable. The only way to counter this weakness is through piety and lasting alertness," he added.
Concerning the responsibility of government officials, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out, "Imam Ali (greetings be upon him) considers control and supervision over officials and managers necessary for social progress and prosperity, as they are the ones to whom affairs of the country and of the people are entrusted."
Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran further referred to the designation of the current year as "The Year of Accountability" and said that the accountability of officials would increase the people's knowledge of strong and weak points and would boost their hopes for the future. He said government organs and institutions should cooperate with the media, especially with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), in materializing this accountability.
At the end of the meeting, evening and night prayers were led by Ayatollah Khamenei. After the prayers, the guests broke their fast along with the Leader.
