Iranian Parliamentarians Call on the Leader

A large number of deputies of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) called on the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei on Sunday, May 28.

In an address to the audience, the Leader described the country's present conditions in terms of inspiring and motivating elements as 'unique' and similar to the conditions that existed in the country during the early years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that today, as in the early years following the revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has the initiative in the field of political rivalries, and that its competitors are in a position of passivity.

"One of these inspiring and motivating elements is the current predominance of revolutionary principles in our society, and this is contrary to what is expected of all revolutions, whose principles and fundamentals usually get weakened with the lapse of time," the Leader told the audience.

He added, "However, the Iranian people and the elites and intellectuals of our nation voted in favor of the genuine values and slogans of the Islamic Revolution, something which showed their real character and identity, and the enemies whose hopes had been raised at a certain stage due to some words and stances were driven into a position of passivity."

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the great scientific achievements of the Iranian youngsters as among other inspiring elements of the present stage, and he expressed his appreciation for the earnest efforts made by the previous government in the scientific sphere.

"Another motivating feature of the present time is the existing solidarity and unity between the three government branches. Although ever since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the late Imam Khomeini had often laid emphasis on the preservation of unity in society, unfortunately at a certain stage attempts were made to disseminate the notion of dual government in the country, and the idea was also widely promoted by the enemies. But what we are now witnessing is the unity and solidarity of the nation and government and all the officials of the Islamic Republic," Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

Further in his statements, the Leader described the provincial tours of the Iranian president as 'very significant'. He stated that nowhere in the world the president of a country is accorded such a warm welcome and received with so much enthusiasm in small towns and large cities. "This is a clear indication of the cordial bonds between the Iranian people and their government officials," he added.

Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out that the expansion of the Islamic Republic's strategic depth in the Islamic world and the increasing interest of Muslim nations in the Islamic Revolution, which is manifested during the visits of high-ranking Iranian officials to other Islamic countries, are also among the strong points of the Islamic system in the present circumstances.

"The letter sent by our honorable president to U.S. president was also a very good initiative, since courage, taking the initiative and outmaneuvering the rivals are of great significance in the international arena," Ayatollah Khamenei told the audience.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader of the Islamic Republic hinted at an enactment of the Majlis that obliged the Iranian government to end its voluntary suspension of nuclear activities if the issue was reported or referred to the UN Security Council, and he described the enactment as one of the best parliamentary enactments ever since the Islamic Republic was established.

As regards the issues related to Iran's peaceful use of nuclear energy, Ayatollah Khamenei stated, "The young Iranian scientists, through their great achievements in the field of nuclear science, have indeed ensured the future energy required by the Iranian nation for the long years to come. These achievements should be firmly protected, since any withdrawal in this arena is a hundred percent detrimental."

Referring to the pressure that is being exerted by the enemies and hegemonic powers on the Islamic Republic, the Leader noted that the enemies are trying to exert pressure on Iran through various schemes and stratagems.

"The remarks of U.S. and British politicians that they have no problem with the Iranian nation - which are sheer lies - are among such stratagems. The fact of the matter is that their whole problem is with the Iranian nation, since our government and our officials have all emanated from the votes of this same nation, and it is the Iranian nation that is supporting and defending the Islamic system," the Leader observed.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the attempts to foment tension and give rise to ethnic and religious conflicts as another stratagem applied by the enemies and as their last resort against the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic.

"The enemies of the Iranian nation have openly announced that they have allocated funds for actions against the Iranian nation. But as always, based on a wrong analysis, they have entered a region which is the pivot and stronghold of the revolution. Therefore, this machination is also doomed to failure," he noted.

The Leader underlined the brilliant record of Azarbaijan Province in the constitutional movement and in the Islamic Revolution and also in the events of the post-revolution era. He stated that the enemies are not knowledgeable about Azarbaijan, since the residents of this province have always been unparalleled in wholeheartedly defending the Islamic Revolution and the country's independence and territorial integrity.

Ayatollah Khamenei also touched on the events which took place in Tabriz shortly after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, and he recalled the Imam Khomeini's emphasis in those days that the residents of Tabriz would themselves give a proper response to the agitators.

"Today also the residents of Azarbaijan and the vigilant and revolutionary people of this province will respond to the enemy in the most appropriate manner. Indeed, as they say in their slogans, the self-sacrificing Azarbaijan will never separate from the revolution," Ayatollah Khamenei told the audience.

Further in his statements, the Leader of the Islamic Republic referred to the failure of U.S. plan to create a great Middle East pivoting on the Zionist regime. He stated that the reality on the ground indicates that the Islamic Republic of Iran is presently the pivot of the Middle East.

"This reality as well as other strong points and the stability and firm establishment of the Islamic system attach special prominence to the present juncture. However, everybody is duty-bound to continue treading the right path, keep the flag of values and principles hoisted and avoid egotism and negligence, since Almighty Allah has no kinship bonds with any nation, and divine retribution will be meted out to conceited and negligent individuals," the Leader noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei expressed his appreciation for the selfless efforts made and valuable services rendered by the speaker and deputies of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. He also called for greater cooperation between the three branches of government, especially between the legislature and the executive.

"The Islamic Consultative Assembly, while preserving its independent position, should also heed the expediencies of our time; the executive, for its part, should try to carry out its responsibilities towards the Majlis, so that the people may feel that there is coordination and harmony between the two government branches," Ayatollah Khamenei told the audience.

The Leader further stated, "Majlis deputies should also act in such a way that the slogans which the people have voted for may be fulfilled through their performance."

Before the Leader's statements, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Gholamali Haddad-Adel described the Majlis as the crystallization of the constitutional movement. He also praised the high status of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, calling it a manifestation of democracy under the Islamic system.

Haddad-Adel further said that Majlis deputies, while performing their supervisory duty in a precise manner, extend full support to the executive. He added that the independent position of the Majlis is manifested by fair criticism and expert views on the part of deputies.

Speaker of the Majlis referred to the approval of a comprehensive bill on rendering extensive services to war-disabled veterans, the ratification of a motion that obliged the government to end its voluntary suspension of nuclear activities if the issue was referred to or reported to the UN Security Council and the approval of a motion on formulating a national dress-code as among the important enactments of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.

Haddad-Adel also said that Majlis deputies are provided with expert advice and counsel by the Majlis Research Center.
