Ayatollah Khamenei: A knowledge-based economy is the pathway towards development

A knowledge-based economy is the pathway towards development for a country that relies on knowledgeable and innovative human resources.

Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, met Monday afternoon with the officials of the Population and Housing Census, the members of the Supreme Council of Statistics and the managers of the Statistics Center of Iran. Speaking at the meeting, His Eminence stated that exact, thorough and scientific statistics and information is the main basis of efficient decision-making for the country.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution stressed the importance of the general census plan, saying: “All our dear people should participate in this important plan in a serious manner.”

Ayatollah Khamenei described statistics as an absolute and fundamental necessity for planning on the diverse and extensive resources and needs of the country. He added: “All the dear people should participate in this important plan so that the decisions are made in a correct, timely and efficient manner. Besides, they should provide statistics centers with the data and information that they need in an exact and thorough manner. As officials have said, these data are confidential.”

Addressing the officials of statistics centers in the country, His Eminence said: “In statistics, both the status quo and the process of change should be identified so that the officials and decision-makers of the country are not surprised by changes in today’s world in which the rate of change is very high.”

Stressing the importance of precision in statistics, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution pointed to the damage that wrong statistics cause the country, adding: “Unfortunately, the country is backward in terms of statistics. Even some officials are not aware of real and true facts and statistics in their own divisions.”

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the significance of statistics in knowledge-based economy and stated: “Knowledge-based economy – which is the key to the progress of the country – is dependent on knowledgeable and innovative manpower. It should become clear how many talented, innovative and motivated youth and individuals exist in every economic and technical area.”

His Eminence also pointed to the importance of statistics in the economy of resistance and added: “The real cure for the problems of the country is the economy of resistance. Even if all the paths of the world are opened to us but the economy of the country does not grow from the inside, then eventually this equation will be a failed equation.”

He mentioned: “The requirement for achieving the economy of resistance is the existence of exact statistics and data about the condition of domestic production and of production centers and their needs.”

The timely submission of statistics to the officials and decision-makers of the country and the creators of general thoughts and discourses was another point that the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution raised.

Referring to the issue of aging and the incorrect continuation of policies on population decrease, he said: “A four-percent growth in the population of the country during 1360s required a remedy which was those policies on population decrease. However, continuing those policies should have been stopped or slowed down by submitting statistics on time and during a specific period of time. This is because the problem of aging is one for which there is no remedy. In the present time, advanced countries do not have a remedy for it either.”

Ayatollah Khamenei described the existence of differences in the statistics that statistics center present as a great disaster, adding: “Sometimes, different centers release different statistics about the rate of unemployment, of inflation and of economic growth. This issue will cause the people to lose their trust.”

His Eminence stated that some administrations have rejected the statistics that former administrations have released. He reiterated: “The source of these dualities should become clear. This means that there were certain problems in presenting statistics either during the time of that administration or during the time of the subsequent one. In any case, tampering with statistics – which are analyzed and judged by our wise people – is a major sin.”

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution stressed: “One of the most fundamental tasks in this regard is gathering statistics in one center and also focusing on one scientific and accepted method.”

His Eminence stated that gathering and analyzing statistics should be done by using the new tools and methods: “The announcement of the general census’s results should not be delayed. The results should be announced by the end of the year through scientific and exact analyses.”

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated that evaluating the results and the function of important documents such as the 20-year strategic plan and the fundamental policies of the country is another important responsibility of the statistics center, adding: “The statistics center should both work on the implementation of policies, and on the results of implementing these policies so that they are reviewed and corrected in case the results are negative.”
