The following is the full text of the message delivered on May 27, 2016 by Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, to the inauguration of the Tenth Islamic Consultative Majlis (Parliament). The message was read out on May 28, 2016, by Hujjat-ul Islam wal-Muslimeen Muhammadi Golpayegani, the head of the Supreme Leader’s office.
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I would like to congratulate the great people of Iran, and you elected members and enacters of these great responsibilities on the occasion of the inauguration of the Tenth Islamic Consultative Majlis in the auspicious month of Sha’ban which is the month of spirituality, humility and great religious eids. And I thank the people of Iran for continuing the continuous cycle of legislation with the epic of the elections and for adding another link to this vital chain.
All these originate from divine blessings. They are a sign of the kindness and mercy of His Holy Existence Who assisted the people, the country and the Islamic Republic with His powerful and peerless hand. One’s heart and tongue are incapable of expressing appreciation of this blessing.
With their maximum presence in the highly significant parliamentary elections, the people of Iran once more repeated their time-honored allegiance to the Islamic Republic and they responded to ill-wishers in this loud voice. The valuable loyalty of the people calls on the officials of the Islamic Republic in different sectors to show their sense of responsibility and to thank God for His blessings. The responsibility of us officials is heavier than in the past now.
The oath that the members take on the first day of their work – which is a religiously binding and obligatory oath – has specified the main chapters of parliamentary responsibilities in the Majlis. With wisdom, intelligence, sincerity and piety, you dear brothers and sisters can carry out these responsibilities within the framework of your legal actions – which are mainly legislation and supervision – thus becoming honorable before God and people. It is in this way that you can help the Islamic Consultative Majlis to preserve its special position, which is being at the top of the affairs of the country.
The stormy conditions of the region and the world, and the international adventures of imperialists and their followers have made Iran face circumstances that are more complex than the past. The power of the country for confronting these circumstances depends on the intelligence and firm determination of all officials and on their success in taking the initiative into their hands. The revolutionary and legal responsibility of you honorable officials is to turn the Majlis into a solid trench in the face of the deception, lures and impudent greed of arrogance and making it into a shining source of reliance for pious and revolutionary people.
Implementing the economy of resistance with all its definite requirements and making vigorous attempts to expand and deepen Islamic culture are the two urgent priorities of the present time. There are also other important priorities in different areas – which are related to national power and ensuring the security and immunity of the country – that guarantee the establishment of social justice and the independence and progress of the country. Knowing these priorities is one of the responsibilities of the members and it is accessible to their intelligent minds.
I advise the honorable members to rely on God the Mighty, to trust His promises and to show resistance upon His divine and straight path and I ask them to avoid being engaged in partisan trivialities and preferring personal motives to public interests.
I deem it necessary to sincerely thank the honorable members of the ninth Majlis, its diligent and hardworking speaker, the entire presiding board and also all those who have been involved in the tenth parliamentary elections in all its areas.
I would like to commemorate the memory of our great and late Imam (r.a.) and memory of the martyrs and self-sacrificing individuals on this path.
Sending my greetings and bowing to Hazrat Waliullah-(Imam Mahdi) may our souls be sacrificed for his sake- I ask Allah the Exalted to bestow success on all of you.
