Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks during a speech in the 1st International Conference on Islamic Awakening. The two-day event, which has been attended by hundreds of intellectuals from Islamic countries, Europe and America, was opened on Saturday in Tehran.
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that being popular is the most important element of the identity of these revolutions. He added that foreign powers that were trying to keep despotic and corrupt rulers of these countries in power are demanding a share in the revolutionary movements in the region.
His Eminence referred to the enormous damage caused by NATO's air raids on Libya and added that the interference of America and NATO has caused irreparable damage in Libya. "If NATO and America had not interfered in Libya, it might have taken a little longer for the people to achieve a victory, but instead all that infrastructure would not have been destroyed, all those innocent people, including women and children, would not have been killed and the enemies who used to cooperate with Gaddafi for years would not claim a right to interfere in this oppressed and war-torn country."
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution reiterated that after the inevitable fall of its pawns, the west tries to continue its hegemony by preserving the essence of the system and the main levers. His Eminence added that the scenario might come in the form of putting forward models of government and constitutions and enticing Islamic countries into the trap of cultural, political and economic dependence on the west. "This would mean restoring the hegemony of the west, re-establishing renovated western and foreign models of revolutionary principles and finally taking control of the situation."
His Eminence said that the arrogant powers use methods such as promoting uproar, terrorism and war among followers of different religions, ethnicities, parties or neighboring countries. He added that the arrogant powers also impose sanctions, freeze assets of nations and wage a all-out propaganda wars to achieve their goals. He reiterated: "Never trust America, NATO and criminal regimes such as England, France and Italy that divided up our country among themselves and plundered it for a long time. Be suspicious of them and do not believe their smiles. Behinds these smiles and promises, they are hiding plots and treachery."
More than 600 intellectuals from 80 different countries of the world of Islam, Europe and America have participated in the two-day conference on Islamic Awakening.
