Disputing polytheism and disbelief: A fundamental principle in Islamic life

The dispute that’s involved in Bara'at is a dispute with polytheism and disbelief. This is one of the most fundamental principles of Islamic life. The kind of dispute that must not take place during Hajj is a dispute between the [Muslim] brothers and believers.

Hajj and the closeness of hearts of the Islamic Ummah

If a call is issued for, say, a specific group of people, or a particular city from the cities of the country, or all the people of the country to gather on a certain day at a certain place... what does it mean? It means that this gathering is for a purpose and an objective... This is what Hajj is. They have been invited for a purpose... That purpose is to bring the hearts of the Islamic Ummah closer together. The goal is the unity of the Islamic Ummah... in the face of disbelief.

Bara'at in Hajj fosters vigilance in facing enemies

[The US’s] main policy toward Islam and Muslims is warmongering. ... Muslims must be vigilant. They must thwart this satanic policy. Hajj is an environment for creating such awareness, and this is the philosophy behind the renunciation of polytheists and Arrogant Powers during Hajj.

The united hand of the Islamic Ummah against aggressive America and its mad dog, the Zionist Regime

The kind of unity that forms a united front against enmities, that roars like thunder against the embodiment of Satan – the aggressive and treacherous America and its mad dog, the Zionist regime – and that courageously stands firm against coercion, is the very meaning of God's command: "And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided" (Quran 3:103).

The Islamic Ummah should make decisions together

Through Prophet Abraham (pbuh), Almighty God invited not just a specific group of individuals, but all of humanity to Hajj: "And proclaim the Hajj to all the people" (Quran 22:27). He says invite "all people," everyone, all of humankind to Hajj… It means that the divine will is for all Muslims to come closer together… to make decisions together. The great void we are facing today is this: Making decisions together.

Hajj: A display of Islamic Ummah’s power against Arrogant Powers

Hajj is a display of power against the Arrogant Powers who are the epicenter of corruption, oppression, the killing of the weak, and plundering. Today, the body and soul of the Islamic Ummah are wounded and bloodied by their cruelty and wickedness.

Bara'at: A political act and a religious duty

The reason we insist on the issue of Bara'at [renunciation] and do it ... is because it’s an Islamic obligation, "Indeed, Allah and his Messenger repudiate the polytheists" (Quran 9:3). The believers renounce the polytheists too, "Indeed we repudiate you and whatever you worship besides Allah. We disavow you, and enmity and hatred have appeared between you and us forever, unless you come to have faith in Allah alone” (Quran 60:4). This is a part of the religion. Yes, it’s political. It’s a political act in the Hajj rituals, but this political act is precisely a religious obligation.

Renounce the polytheists in both word and action

My strong recommendation to all the fortunate pilgrims, particularly the scholars and preachers from Islamic countries who are present in this divine gathering, and to the Friday Prayer Leaders of the two Holy Mosques, is that with a proper understanding of the issue, they must realize their immediate, urgent duty today. ... They should direct all their motivation and outcries toward the Arrogant Powers and the enemies of the Islamic Ummah, particularly the heads of all the seditions – Zionism and the US. They must show their renunciation of the polytheists in both word and action.

Bara'at and crying out against tyrants

Bara'at [renunciation] means that people gather [during Hajj] and raise their voices against those well-dressed tyrants who come with neckties and perfume but kill human beings like the most savage of savages. People also raise their voices against those who support such oppressors and make decisions in favor of them in international forums.

The greatest benefit of Hajj for the Islamic Ummah...

[Hajj] is for the benefit of people... I believe there is no greater benefit for the Islamic Ummah than unity.

Bara'at: The spirit of Hajj

Bara'at [renunciation] isn’t something we’ve introduced into Hajj that wasn’t a part of it. It’s a part of Hajj itself, it’s the spirit of Hajj, and it’s the true meaning of this magnificent gathering.
