The brief opportunity one has in Hajj is indeed a practical exercise and test. Human beings learn that living a life free of ostentation and without paying attention to material pleasures is also possible. That is not to say we must spend our lives as if we are in ihram. One must make use of the material blessings that God has made permissible. However, being attached to material pleasures, feeling restless in their absence and limiting existence to such things… must be avoided so as to learn that it is possible to spend part of our life totally detached from everything but Allah. The pilgrim on Hajj learns that this is possible. See what a great opportunity Hajj is.
