“And this flag won’t be borne but by people of insight, steadfastness, and knowledge of the truth’s position.”
When two armies confronted each other during the time of Amir al-Mu'minin (‘a), both performed prayers, both fasted if it was the month of Ramadan, and the Qur'an was recited among both armies. In both opposing armies, the Muslims felt they lacked the clarity and peace of mind of the Prophet's (PBUH) time. Therefore, several times in the Battle of Siffin, there were murmurs of questions and astonishment in the forces of the Commander of the Faithful (PBUH)… In the events of the time of Imam Ali (PBUH) this state of obscurity, mixing of groups, and having the same slogans made the situation so hard that Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH) repeatedly said, "Resistance alone is not enough. Insight is needed. Intelligence is needed. Sharp-wittedness is needed.” This situation was particular to the time of Imam Ali (PBUH). Imam Ali's sufferings and troubles were also the result of this.
