The visiting President of Azerbaijan Republic, Ilham Aliyev, met the Grand Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, on Tuesday, January 25.
Speaking at the meeting, the Leader expressed his pleasure over the expansion of relations between the two countries and stated that there were bright and encouraging prospects for mutual cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan Republic.
Ayatollah Khamenei also referred to the ancient bonds of friendship between the Iranian and Azeri nations and pointed out that the two nations shared numerous commonalities and held similar stands in many areas. He called for further expansion of relations in all areas of cooperation, especially in political, economic, cultural, commercial and security spheres.
Elsewhere in his statements, the Leader of the Islamic Republic emphasized that the expansion of Tehran-Baku relations would secure the interests of both countries. Hinting at the fact that the U.S. administration is not trustworthy, he stated that Iran and Azerbaijan Republic will always remain alongside each other, and that they should not allow their friendly ties to be influenced by policies of the outsiders.
Ayatollah Khamenei expressed hopes that Azerbaijan Republic would make further progress and stated, "We are very fond of the people of Azerbaijan Republic, and we believe that all the existing issues, including the Caspian issue, can be resolved in a brotherly manner."
The President of Azerbaijan Republic, for his part, expressed great pleasure over his trip to the Islamic Republic. He said that the relations between the two countries were expanding, and that nothing would be able to undermine this trend.
Referring to the positive results of the visits reciprocated by the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan Republic, Aliyev noted that the documents that were to be signed in Tehran the next day would speed up the expansion of Tehran-Baku relations. He emphasized that the expansion of relations with Iran at all levels and in all areas was one of the principles of the national policy of Azerbaijan Republic.
