Leader’s Speech to Seminarians

The following is the full text of the speech delivered on March 13, 1990 by Ayatollah Khamenei the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in a meeting with seminarians.

In the Name Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The role of turbans and those who wear them is much more significant than the past.

By Allah's favor, starting to wear the clothes of promoting Islam and religious scholarship will be auspicious to all you dear brothers. The coincidence of this ceremony with the auspicious birthday anniversary of the Imam of the Age (Allah's greetings be upon him and may He hasten his reappearance) is undoubtedly important, enjoyable and auspicious to you. The birthday anniversary of the Imam of the Age (a.s.) is definitely a great Eid, and it contains great blessings. By Allah's favor, you will always move on the path of that great Imam.

I often tell the friends who wear a turban that their turban is fairly light, but the responsibility that it puts on their shoulders is very heavy. Today the strength of the Islamic movement in the world depends on the Islamic Republic, and the strength of the Islamic Republic depends on religious scholars and standard-bearers of Islamic jurisprudence. Today the role of these turbans and those who wear them is far more significant than the past.

I would firmly say that our religious scholars have never been this important over the past 1100 years. They have never rendered as many services as they do today, and they have never played a more significant role in the world than today. This is the situation of the Shia clergy both in Iran and wherever the signs of the Islamic movement are clearly visible. If the situation remains like this, the Islamic movements will achieve their goal. And if the situation changes, the movements will fail to achieve their goal. Therefore, the continuation of the Islamic movements in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Azerbaijan Republic, Kashmir and many other places depends on religious scholars. If religious scholars play a role, there will be hope of victory. Otherwise, the movements will either fail to achieve victory, or they will stray away from their path. This is the role that religious scholars should fulfill.

It is necessary to study very hard.

Gentlemen, you have entered this arena to fulfill such a significant role. You should pay attention to this point. It is necessary to study very hard, otherwise your knowledge will be shallow and useless. Rendering services to Islam but failing to study hard is useless for religion. It is not possible to render such services without studying. It is possible to render other kinds of services, but serving Islam depends on knowledge. It is necessary to study hard. What is more important than studying is the spirituality that our hearts should enjoy. "A person who appoints himself as the leader of a group of people should start educating himself before educating others." By Allah's favor, this principle will be practiced. I hope this new stage will be auspicious for you, and I hope Allah the Exalted will bestow success on you.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings
