Mirza Kuchak Khan

During our Revolutionary fight, we gained energy remembering Mirza: Imam Khamenei

Younes Ostad Sarayi, also known as Mirza Kuchak Khan, was born in Gilan. In his youth, he studied Theology. He was one of the revolutionaries in the Constitutional Movement, and he stood up against the Qajar Dictatorship and against Reza Khan Pahlavi. Mirza Kuchak Khan was the leader of the Jungle Movement of Gilan for a time during World War I. At that time, he and his comrades battled against the occupying forces of the Russian empire and Britain. On the occasion of his martyrdom Khamenei.ir publishes Imam Khamenei's statements about this brave fighter.

Gilan, the land of fostering self-sacrifice and struggle

Mirza Kuchak Khan Jangali is the symbol of the bravery and jihad of the people of Gilan - the man who rose up against foreigners and aggressors for the sake of Islam and the Quran, and his memory should never be forgotten. But after the Islamic Revolution, there has been no shortage of the people who have managed to make Gilan a symbol in different arenas. Dec 29, 2010

The origin of Mirza Kuchak Khan's movement was one hundred percent Islamic

Mirza Kuchak Khan was a cleric, a seminarian. His behavior was also based on religion. Although we see that he had certain opponents inside his own camp and although some well-known groups of people opposed him, the late Mirza Kuchak Khan observed the principles of sharia when he faced them and he was not the kind of person to get involved in a civil conflict. For instance, there were some people who disagreed with him on religious issues. His radical followers said that they should suppress the opponents. Mirza Kuchak Khan did not let them do this. He prevented them from doing this. That is to say, his behavior was based on religion.

And the movement was a purely Islamic-Iranian movement. Well, as you know, at that time the commotion that had been created in the world because of the emergence of Marxism and the Soviet Union and the attraction that they had for a number of nations had magnetized a number of people. And the people around him betrayed him because of this. But this man was not attracted to Marxist ideas because he was committed to Islam. He openly and decisively rejected and opposed the Marxist theory although his close followers - who were with him from the beginning - were attracted to the theory. Of course, they died without having achieved their goals. None of them lived a fulfilling life, none of them gained any good thing from supporting the Bolshevik movement, and their support for this movement was not fairly reciprocated.

He also rejected Marxism because he was opposed to foreigners. That is to say, Marxism was a policy that was established by foreigners. Although he was faced with the ruling regimes such as England, Russian Cossacks and similar regimes, he was not attracted to them. He preserved his independence. Mirza Kuchak Khan is an outstanding example. I hope that God will raise his position. Nov 19, 2012

Mirza said a loud 'no' to the Soviet Union and Britain
Mirza Kuchak was a man alone who said a loud 'no' to the two great powers of the time, the Russians and the British. He did not deal with the Russians or the British. There were others then, who wanted to fight against the government of that time and later against Reza Khan who was just taking office, but they relied on the Russians. They went to Baku and made ties with them. Then they returned to Iran, and became committed to the Russians. But Mirza Kuchak Khan refused to compromise. He fought against the English, the Russian Kazakhs and against Reza Khan's army – as well as against those who were in charge before Reza Khan. He did not even compromise with Ehsanullah Khan or others. The young people of Gilan visit the tomb of Mirza Kuchak Khan and see this man who was alone, this pious and pure man. Although he died oppressed in the middle of the Gilan forests, he fixed himself in Iran’s history. He died, but he became a guiding torch. During our fights (for the Revolution), every time we remembered Mirza Kuchak Khan and read his biography, we gained energy. He devoted his effort, his determination, his personality and his identity to give identity, personality, strength and determination to a generation. This is very valuable. There were people like him who fought alone and died alone, but you can see that they are not alone and unknown today. The movement of history is extraordinary. It didn’t and won’t let the Sheikh Fazlullahs, the Mirza Kuchak Khans, the Khiabanis, and others like them remain unknown even though they died alone. The enemies want to take these prominent figures away from the Iranian youth. May 2, 2001
