On National Day of Planting Trees, Ayatollah Khamenei planted tree saplings

In Quran, an "avowed enemy" corrupts Earth by wasting water

There is another verse in Quran about the “avowed enemy,” that is, the most obstinate, the most ominous, and the most stubborn of enemies, whose characteristics have been enumerated. One of their characteristics is that when they find power on Earth they foster corruption and kill people and products. They corrupt the product; that is, both the plant and human products, and destroy them.

I am addressing this to any person who is interested in Iran and the future of the country. I am addressing this to those who think about the future of their children because they are the ones who will live in this country in the future. When you use foreign products, you are actually helping foreign companies, workers and manufactures to increase their products. This will harm domestic production and it will lead to its failure. I am saying this to all the people, particularly those who are big consumers. This also includes government officials and employees. They too should use domestic products in their buildings and for their different needs.

Avoiding extravagance is another issue. We should avoid extravagance and wasting money, public resources, water, bread and soil. Soil is a source of wealth. Water is a source of wealth. Bread is a precious product. They should be careful. Everyone should be careful and they should have a sense of responsibility. They should not destroy these resources.

The water, the soil, the air as well as underground reserves and products that exist on the surface of Earth, of which you are currently taking advantage, can be probably used in a way which will be millions of times more efficient, but of which we are not aware now. Humans should continuously strive to find new capacities and to use those capacities to the benefit of human life.

We should reform our habits. We should reform the norms of consumption in our country. We suffer from inappropriate norms of consumption. We should know how to eat, what to eat, and what to wear. We all have a cell phone in our pockets, and as soon as a new model enters the market, we all go and change our cell phones. Why is that? Why do we act so impulsively? Our officials are responsible in this regard. Being wasteful is not limited to personal matters only. We are wasteful at the national level as well. As I previously said, we are wasteful in using our electricity and energy supplies. A great proportion of such wastefulness is out of the hands of the people. It is the officials who have to take appropriate measures to solve this problem. Using old communication networks, electricity transfer networks, and electricity cables will cause electricity to be wasted. We produce electricity, and then waste it by using old electricity transfer networks. Or if we use old water transfer networks, a great proportion of our water supply will be wasted.

One of the most important and necessary tasks in the area of tree plantation and the environment is the issue of watershed management. If the organizations in charge take the issue of watershed management seriously and if they attach significance to it  whether the areas which are related to the Ministry of Agriculture or the areas which are related to the Ministry of Energy  then both unnecessary floods and haze will be prevented and the other advantages of plants and trees will be felt as well. During the process of watershed management, if they can plant fruit-yielding trees in watershed centers, the benefits will possibly be more. Of course, it is experts who should give their opinion in this regard.
