Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, on Sunday, August 15, cited the basic principles of Iran's foreign policy as promoting Islam, standing up to the hegemonic policies of arrogant powers as well as defending the oppressed nations and supporting the world's Muslims.
Addressing a gathering of Iranian ambassadors and envoys posted abroad, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that the Islamic Republic's strategic goals, the general framework of the country's foreign policy and its regional and international diplomacy have not been changed for the past 25 years.
The Leader pointed to the progress that the Iranian nation has made in the political, economic, social, cultural, and scientific spheres and said that even the enemies admit that the Islamic Republic is a strong country.
"They are aware that the Islamic vigilance of Muslim nations across the globe is a result of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran," he added.
Concerning the recent changes in international diplomacy, Ayatollah Khamenei stated that the world's nations are opposed to modern Western liberal democracy. He noted that the U.S. diplomacy has faced failure, and the United States has become isolated internationally.
"The Islam we believe in is based on the three principles of spirituality, rationalism, and justice, and it is completely different from the liberal or reactionary Islam," he pointed out.
Elsewhere in his speech, Ayatollah Khamenei called on the Iranian officials in charge of foreign policy to make use of all the potential and capabilities of the Iranian nation in order to make Iran's diplomatic apparatus more efficient and give the country a more active role in regional and international affairs.
Referring to issues such as human rights, the rights of minorities, the campaign against terrorism, women's rights and the ban on weapons of mass destruction, the Leader stressed that Iranians should be recognized as the champions with regard to such matters.
Ayatollah Khamenei further pointed to every nation's inalienable right to gain access to nuclear energy. He noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran would pay no attention to the hue and cry raised by the West about its peaceful nuclear activities, and that it would continue to pursue its logical objective of developing nuclear technology intended for peaceful purposes.
Prior to the Leader's remarks, Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi presented a report on the performance of the Foreign Ministry.
