Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday, December 8, visited the large Karkheh Dam which has been built northwest of the city of Andimeshk in Khuzestan Province.
During the visit, the Minister of Energy Habibullah Bitaraf briefed the Leader about the dam's construction and the effective measures taken for water management. The minister also referred to the considerable knowledge and expertise of the Iranian engineers who design and construct dams and presented a statistical report about dams and hydro-electric power plants in the country.
The Karkheh Dam, the largest earth dam in the country which has been constructed on the Karkheh River, is capable of generating 934 million kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric energy and irrigating 320,000 hectares of regional farmland per year.
After visiting the Karkheh Dam and its hydroelectric power plant, the Leader considered the construction of the dam by Iranian engineers and experts a great and valuable achievement. Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that such a great achievement indicates the perseverance and competence of the devoted and revolutionary young Iranian experts and once again proves that accomplishing such commendable deeds is possible through self-reliance and self-confidence.
The Leader of the Islamic Republic further referred to the fact that before the Islamic Revolution, only 13 dams had been built in Iran, while some 72 dams have since been designed and constructed in this country. Ayatollah Khamenei also pointed out that, thanks to the skilled, competent and revolutionary Iranian workforce, the Islamic Republic of Iran is presently one of the leading countries in the world in the area of dam construction.
