The Loss of These Dear Ones Was Bitter for All of Us

The following is the full text of the speech delivered on November 14, 2017 by Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in a meeting with the heads of the three branches of government. The meeting was held to coordinate responses to the earthquake that occurred in Kermanshah province on November 12.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

I deem it necessary to express my deep grief and that of the officials of the country because of the very bitter event of the earthquake that occurred in Kermanshah. The courageous people and the valorous border guards of Kermanshah province suffered the loss of their dear ones in that incident. We share their grief.

Of course, all the sufferings that individuals endure in this life, God will reward them. Allah the Exalted will make up for those sufferings. But in any way, losing your dear ones is very difficult. The difficulty of losing those dear ones who joined God and who passed away in that earthquake, in the cities and villages of Kermanshah province is bitter. It is both bitter for their families and bitter for us.

I hope that Allah the Exalted will bestow patience on those families, that He showers peace and tranquility on their hearts, that He enlightens their eyes with His kindness and mercy, and that He rewards them for their sufferings, both in this world and in the hereafter.

Of course, such incidents have another impact which is to marshal the Islamic community of the country. They encourage everyone to participate in the arenas of cooperation, kindness and brotherhood. These are arenas that exist in the country. I hope that by Allah's favour, this incident can bring some blessings to the dear, courageous and hero-nurturing people of Kermanshah, to the people of Iran and particularly to the officials of the country. This is a divine test for the officials of the country. By Allah's favor, this will be an arena for officials to fulfil their responsibilities and duties.

In the past two days, the officials of the country showed their presence in the area and they sympathized with the people. Today, Mr. President and some of our honorable ministers were in Kermanshah. They showed their sympathy to the people. I hope that by Allah's favor, such acts of sympathy will continue in the arena of action and implementation with complete strength so that the problems and pains that the people have endured in such weather, which is turning colder on a daily basis – this is a tough season – will be alleviated, God willing.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings
