'They’ve definitely been deliberately run over. You can quite clearly see the tyre tracks where they’ve gone off the road'

A driver deliberately ran over 17 kangaroos and killed them, an animal welfare group has claimed.

The bodies of 16 kangaroos were found along a 100-metre (300 foot) stretch of road in Wacol, just outside the east coast city of Brisbane, Michael Beatty, a spokesman for the RSPCA in Queensland State, said.

Another kangaroo was injured so badly that it later had to be put down, said Mr Beatty.

The stretch of road runs between a women’s prison and a men’s prison on Grindle Road.

The welfare group said it was appalled by the deaths of the animals, most of which were young.

“They’ve definitely been deliberately run over," said Mr Beatty.

"You can quite clearly see the tyre tracks where they’ve gone off the road to hit them."

The driver has not been found and the group appealed for any witnesses to come forward with information.
